As might be expected from an ex-geologist, we have a forensic level of detail about the soil that holds these old vines of Macabeu and Parellada (it is, for the record, made up of carbonate shale and pebbles of calcareous sandstone). But here Jordi shows an innate winmaker’s instinct for drinkability, giving the fruit a short maceration before leaving the juice to age in his cellar’s buried amphora leaving a wine of bright acidity and herbal fruit.

Jordi Llorens

Jordi Llorens was, in a previous life, a geologist before turning his attention fully towards the 15ha of vines inherited from his parents in Blancafort, inland Catalunya. That grounding in the science of the earth has proven immeasurably valuable, and he today maintains an intimate knowledge of the soil structures in each of his plots which, in turn, allows him to produce fruit of impeccable quality. Those grapes are treated with the lightest of touches in the cellar, where Jordi works without S02, to make some of Europe’s most beautifully balanced wines.
