There aren’t many winemakers in this roasting hot corner of France who are able to turn the sometimes gawky, indelicate variety Carignan in to something as fine as this from Matassa’s Tom Lubbe. He would, we’re sure, tell you that all the work is done in the vineyards, but that does a disservice to his gentle sleight-of-hand in the cellar. Rich without being overbearing, juicy without feeling confected - amazing.
Matassa
Tom Lubbe started Domaine Matassa in 2003 after working for several years at the nearby Domaine Gauby. He farms 12 hectares of old vineyards around the village of Calce in the Roussillon. He is a curious, intelligent guy and his winemaking has really evolved over the years and nowadays his wines are a reference point for this part of France.
