Metisse means ‘mixed’ in French and it initially referred to the fact that this was a wine once made with both Gamay and Chardonnay. Today, Julien has done away with the white fruit and this wine’s mixed character is down to this being made from Gamay from two different plots, treated differently (one macerated, the other just pressed) to leave a fresh, juicy, high-acid expression of this grape behind.

Julien Altaber has worked at Saint-Aubin’s Domaine Derain for years where he rose from cellar hand to essentially handling most of the estate’s winemaking alongside legendary natural wine maverick Dominique Derain. Julien now focusses most of his time on his own production with a network of small vineyards and like-minded growers providing the fruit for wines that feel like a truly unique expression of the Burgundian countryside.
